Donald Trump doesn't understand the challenges with securing the border from illegal immigrants, said former Texas Gov. Rick Perry.
Perry responded on Sunday to the billionaire entertainer's recent comments that the Texas governor didn't do enough to secure the border while he was in charge of the state that has a 1,200-mile border with Mexico.
"We surged our law enforcement and National Guard," Perry said while on ABC's "This Week." "Executive experience really matters."
Perry also called Trump's controversial comments on Mexicans bringing drugs and crime across the border "offensive."
"Donald Trump does not represent the Republican Party," said Perry, running for president for a second time after flaming out in 2012.
"Hispanics in America and Texas from the Alamo to Afghanistan have been extraordinary people and citizens in our country [and] in our state," said Perry. "To paint with that broad a brush that Donald Trump did, he will have to defend those remarks."
Trump doubled down on his criticism of Perry on Twitter on Sunday.
Rick Perry failed at the border. Now he is critical of me. He needs a new pair of glasses to see the crimes committed by illegal immigrants.
