A pedestrian died after he was struck by a sport-utility vehicle while crossing Jefferson Davis Highway in Woodbridge, police said.
At about 8:25 p.m. Saturday, police responded to the crash in the 13700 block of Jefferson Davis Highway. According to an investigation, 34-year-old Noel Antonio Mejia Ayala was crossing the road and stepped into the path of a 2004 Ford Expedition. Mejia, of Woodbridge, was taken to a hospital where he died later that evening.
Police believe that alcohol was a factor for the victim, who was crossing the road outside of a crosswalk. The driver, a 40-year-old District man, stayed at the scene and was the SUV's only occupant.
