"If that's an investigation, it's a bullshit investigation," Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., said of the FBI report on allegations of sexual assault lodged against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. "The reality is, that is not a full and thorough investigation."
Menendez knows a thing or two about the FBI. He was just indicted on corruption charges last year, and he beat the rap only thanks to a hung jury.
So long as the FBI's Kavanaugh report stays confidential, both sides will make public arguments about private facts. But Menendez is probably the last guy Democrats want to have talking about the FBI specifically, or about justice generally.
The charges he faced stemmed from his involvement in an immigration racket. He used his influence to provide visas for the girlfriends of a wealthy political donor (who was ripping off Medicare on a grand scale) in exchange for rounds of golf at exclusive clubs, flights on private jets, and nights on the town in Paris. That donor went to prison. Menendez is still in the Senate thanks to a hung jury, but he did not escape with his reputation intact.
The Senate Select Ethics Committee reprimanded him in a four-page letter for his conduct that “violated Senate Rules, federal law, and applicable standards of conduct.”
Somehow Menendez believes all of that is behind him. Except no, no it’s not. No journalist from a reputable outlet thinks the crooked senator is qualified to talk. Maybe that is why it looks like the senator’s office staged the interview.

He walks down the hall looking pensively at his smartphone. He looks up when a voice off camera asks his thoughts on the FBI report — you know, like reporters normally do on Capitol Hill. He offers what sort of sound like off-the-cuff remarks. The video goes viral as activists on the Left mash the retweet button apparently unaware of Menendez’s very recent and very ugly brush with the law.
But a spokeswoman from Menendez’s office wouldn’t say whether or not the video was staged or whether any real journalists were involved. “Who said it was an interview?” was all she offered when reached by email.
