Turning a Potomac farm into soccer fields would be a "big mistake," Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley told county leaders.
In a letter to County Executive Ike Leggett and county Board of Education President Shirley Brandman, the governor urged against allowing MSI Soccer, a nonprofit youth soccer organization, to lease county-owned land on Brickyard Road in Potomac where Nick Maravell operates an organic farm.
"It is my understanding that despite the inherent value of Mr. Maravell's farm to Montgomery County's students and to our state, its future is in jeopardy," O'Malley wrote. "We need more assets like Mr. Maravell's farm, rather than fewer."
MSI Soccer is scheduled to take over the lease on Thursday.
The matter is currently before Montgomery County Circuit Court, where a hearing is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
