A 22-year-old Ohio man who prosecutors say was planning an attack on the U.S. Capitol during the 2015 State of the Union address has pleaded guilty.
The Justice Department announced Monday that Christopher Lee Cornell of Green Township, Ohio, pleaded guilty to attempted murder of government officials, a firearms charge and trying to provide support to a terrorist organization.
As part of the plea agreement, he faces a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison. Sentencing is set for Oct. 31.
According to the plea agreement, between August 2014-January 2015, Cornell plotted, planned and attempted to travel to Washington, with the intent to attack the U.S. Capitol during the 2015 State of the Union address on behalf of the Islamic State.
Court documents show he wanted to "wage jihad" and intended to kill law enforcement officers and employees of the U.S. government in Washington.
Cornell has been in custody since being arrested in January 2015 after he bought semiautomatic rifles and roughly 600 rounds of ammunition at a gun shop in Ohio. He was indicted that month.
