A Prince George's County police officer accidentally shot himself during an encounter with a fox believed to be rabid, police said.

About 5:10 p.m. Monday, officers responded to the 13000 block of Clarion Road in Fort Washington. A homeowner complained that a fox had bitten her.

Police encountered an apparently rabid fox that charged at them, and they started to walk backwards. An officer fired shots, tripped and was struck by his own bullets, police spokesman Cpl. Larry Johnson said. The fox was also shot and killed.

The officer was taken to the hospital in serious but non-life threatening condition.
