A police officer exchanged fire with a suspect in Northwest D.C. on Tuesday afternoon. No one was hit by gunfire, but the officer suffered facial cuts from broken glass, said Officer Hugh Carew, a Metropolitan Police Department spokesman.

Police received a report of a man with a gun on the 4800 block of New Hampshire Avenue NW shortly before 4 p.m.

Carew said the suspect fired at an officer, but did not hit him, and the officer fired back.

The suspect is in custody, Carew said. His name and charges were not available. The officer's name was also not available.

The officer was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Carew said he didn't know where the broken glass came from.
