President Obama, during a campaign stop in Iowa, made a joke about the downside of living with the leader of the federal government’s healthy foods initiative.

“Michelle has told me I cannot have a fried twinkie,” Obama said  in Council Bluffs, Iowa, about his upcoming visit to the Iowa State Fair. “But I will be checking out the butter cow and I understand this year there is a chocolate moose, so I’m going to have to take a look at that if I can.” (It’s true — the good people of the Iowa State Fair have procured a life-sized sculpture of a moose, made of chocolate.)

The president transitioned quickly from the jokes to attacking Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., who is campaigning in Iowa today as a running mate for Mitt Romney.

“He is one of the leaders of Congress standing in the way [of the farm bill],” Obama said of Ryan. “So if you happen to see Congressman Ryan, tell him how important this farm bill is to Iowa and our rural communities.”

House Republicans blocked the Senate farm bill because 80 percent of the funding contained in the legislation is dedicated to food stamp spending.
