Michigan State coach Tom Izzo dismissed Korie Lucious from his struggling basketball team Tuesday for "conduct detrimental to the program." The unanimous reaction in College Park: Why not last year?

Fans of the Terrapins don't need to be reminded of the reserve guard who hit perhaps the most painful dagger in Maryland basketball history. His 3-pointer at the buzzer knocked the Terps out of the NCAA tournament when they seemed destined for a Sweet 16 matchup with Northern Iowa.

This year finds Michigan State (12-7) and Maryland (12-7) in similar straits. Both will need strong finishes to secure an NCAA bid.

Lucious was averaging 6.5 points a game and hitting 31.2 percent of his shots. Early this season, the 20-year-old Lucious was suspended following an arrest for driving while intoxicated.
