Video of the incident reportedly shows the stripped women beaten with canes and marched through the streets by a crowd of people for their alleged theft. The women cried and begged to be let go, according to NDTV.

Local police said they have made arrests related to the unlawful public punishment.

"We have arrested five main culprits in this unfortunate incident," a Punjab police spokesperson said on Tuesday, noting all those responsible will be brought to justice.

One of the victims said they went to the market to collect waste, according to a case complaint. The victim says no one tried to help them as they were beaten.

"We were thirsty and went inside the Usman Electric Store and asked for a bottle of water. But its owner Saddam accused us of entering the shop with the intention to steal. Saddam and other men started beating us. Then they stripped, dragged, and beat us through the marketplace. They also made our videos after stripping us ... No one in the mob tried to stop the culprits to stop this atrocity," one of the victims said, according to the complaint.
