They say beauty is only skin deep, but tragically for Clara Shellman, that wasn’t true.
The 55-year-old Florida woman lost her leg from an infection following a pedicure and has now received a $1.75 million settlement, her attorney says.
Shellman’s foot was cut in 2018 during a routine pedicure at Tammy’s Nails 2 in Tampa, and the ensuing infection quickly spread, the Tampa Bay Times reported.

“She was stunned, shocked, crying, and giddy, all at the same time,” her attorney, Paul Fulmer, said Thursday about the settlement. Fulmer recently disclosed the settlement amount although it wasn’t contained in court documents filed Dec. 16.
Attorneys for the nail salon did not return a request for comment, according to the report.
The costs and burden of the injury overwhelmed Shellman to the point that she lost her home and had to move in with relatives who could help care for her daughter in elementary school. She is also unable to walk.
Before the injury, Shellman had severe peripheral arterial disease, which is a narrowing of the blood vessels to the limbs.
The nail salon was accused of using dirty tools and equipment that were dangerous to customers. Workers were not properly trained to maintain the equipment in a sanitary manner, according to the lawsuit.

The salon’s defense in response to that lawsuit was that Shellman was at fault in the amputation because she didn’t immediately see a doctor or “take reasonable efforts to prevent the development of infection." State records reportedly show that a salon still exists in the same location but goes by Tampa Nails 10102.
