White House principal deputy press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre rolled out a new strategy Wednesday, criticizing congressional Republicans who oppose President Joe Biden's social spending legislation.
A reporter flying with the president to Kentucky pressed Jean-Pierre on when recipients of the expanded child tax credit, set to expire on Wednesday, can expect to resume receiving those payments. Jean-Pierre first claimed the expanded CTC has "cut child poverty by half" before flipping it on Republicans.
WHITE HOUSE NOT MARRIED TO CHRISTMAS DEADLINE FOR BUILD BACK BETTER
"He thinks it is reprehensible that Republicans are standing against it, and not voting for Build Back Better is essentially voting — or not supporting it is essentially not supporting a middle-class tax cut for families that has been critical over the past several months," she said. "So the president is going to continue to fight for Build Back Better. We are optimistic that we will get this done before Christmas, and that is our focus, that is our hope, and that's what we’re working towards."
Jean-Pierre was also pressed on whether it was "reprehensible" that West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin opposes the legislation.
"Look, Sen. Joe Manchin is a friend of the president, and we’ve had very good conversations. The president has had two great conversations with him this week that have been productive," she responded. "But we believe the senator wants what we want, which is to deliver for the American people in a way that it has a real effect, especially during this time of COVID and getting the economy back."
