President Joe Biden traveled to Kankakee Farm in rural Illinois Wednesday afternoon to tout new action the administration is taking to support food security in the face of the war in Ukraine.

"The real reason I'm here is to thank American farmers," Biden said near the top of his remarks. "You're literally the backbone of our country. It's not hyperbole, but you also feed the world, and we're seeing with [Russian President Vladimir] Putin's war in Ukraine, you're like the backbone of freedom."

BIDEN TOUTS 'FOOD SECURITY TOOL KIT' FOR SHORTAGES SPARKED BY UKRAINE

The Biden administration announced earlier on Wednesday that in line with the G-7's efforts to stave off food shortages caused by the war, the United States is doubling Biden's past investment in domestic fertilizer production to $500 million.

Furthermore, Biden is expanding the number of counties across the country eligible for double cropping insurance, which allows farmers to "plant a second crop on the same land in the same year, helping boost production without relying on farmers to substitute crops or cultivate new land."

Finally, the Department of Agriculture is ramping up outreach efforts to qualifying farms about its "precision agriculture" and nutrient sharing programs, "saving farmers money over time and extending the usefulness of critical products in short supply worldwide."

The war in Ukraine has halted nearly all grain production in the Black Sea region, the primary origin for Europe's and Africa's grain supplies, and sanctions placed on Russia by the U.S. and allies have also slapped skyrocketing production costs on farmers. Taken together, these factors are forcing food prices to spike across the globe.

"Because of what the Russians are doing in the Black Sea, Putin has warships, battleships preventing the access to the Ukrainian ports to get this grain out," Biden added Wednesday afternoon. "A brutal war launched on Ukrainian soil has prevented Ukrainian farmers from planning next year's crop and next year's harvest."

"We're working hard to invest in farmers like Jeff and feed America and the world," the president concluded. "Thank you for what you do. America owes you."
