A key Trump administration official working on civil service reform abruptly resigned Friday after less than seven months on the job.

The reason for Office of Personnel Management Director Jeff Pon's departure as leader of the nation's civil service was not immediately clear. OPM's email system was down Friday, and many agency employees went home early for Columbus Day weekend, leaving the workforce in the dark.

"A lot of us still don't know" the reason Pon resigned, an OPM spokesman told the Washington Examiner.

After taking office in March, Pon set to work crafting federal workforce reforms, upsetting labor unions but delighting advocates of President Trump's pledge to "drain the swamp."

In May, President Trump signed a trio of executive orders to reduce labor union power, and Pon spoke ambitiously about future steps.

"Certain people and reporters ... have commented, 'Maybe Director Pon is taking on too much.' Actually, what we’re trying to do is take on a lot and ... not leave any rock unturned," Pon told the Washington Examiner in a late May interview. "On our watch we are going to lead and author, versus follow and check the box."

Pon, distinct among recent OPM directors in having a background in human resources, dusted off little-used powers to allow more fluctuation in salaries to account for market conditions. He asked Congress to reduce retirement benefits to some workers by further changing how pay was calculated.

Pon ordered a new live-data dashboard with demographic and performance statistics from federal agencies to help inform changes and ensure efficiency.

"We’re not kicking the can down the road. We have a president who actually wants this sort of change so that the federal government can be the best it can be," Pon told the Examiner in May.

Trump appointed Office of Management and Budget Deputy Director Margaret Weichert, another leader on federal workforce reform initiatives, to serve as acting director following Pon's resignation.

An OMB spokesman referred questions to the White House.

"Jeff Pon resigned earlier today," a White House official told the Washington Examiner, declining to elaborate.
