A driver in Florida struck plowed into a group of children with a vehicle on Monday, killing two and injuring the rest before speeding off, according to local authorities.

Two of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene in Wilton Manors, located roughly 32 miles north of Miami, said Fort Lauderdale Battalion Chief Stephen Gollan, according to WPLG.

Four children, who first responders said were between the ages of 1 and 9, were taken to a hospital. One was listed in critical condition.

"This event is a horrific event any time of the year, let alone right after the holidays," Gollan said in a statement. "And at this time, we're helping the families as well as our first responders by having grief counselors on site to guide them through."

Gollan said people should contact the Wilton Manors Police Department if they have any information, whether it is video footage or any other evidence.

"Two kids killed when witnesses say a speeding driver went around a stopped Broward bus, slammed into the children and then took off," one CBS Miami reporter tweeted.

Further details about the suspected driver or the vehicle were not known as of Monday evening.
