A boy was killed and a woman and a girl were injured in a shooting in Los Angeles Monday afternoon.

An unknown suspect or suspects approached the woman and boy while the girl was on the playground, after which an unknown suspect or suspects fired multiple rounds near Wilmington Park Elementary School, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department told the Washington Examiner. The girl and woman are in stable condition, while the boy was transported to the hospital, where he died, officials said.

“She was in the schoolyard just playing. Innocently, unknowingly, she was just a victim, just a random victim,” LAPD Captain Adrian Gonzalez said of the injured girl, who was struck by a stray bullet, according to KTLA.

LAPD DETECTIVE SAYS LOS ANGELES IS 'UNSAFE' FOR TOURISTS

The LAPD said it is unknown whether the incident is gang-related. The suspect or suspects are still at large, and officials are working on identifying them and finding a motive, the department added.

Local leaders condemned violence following the incident. Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn called the shooting a "tragedy," saying she was praying for all three who were struck Monday.

Los Angeles City Councilman Joe Buscaino, the representative for the district, also condemned violence in areas that "should be safe havens for families."

“Our parks and playgrounds should be safe havens for families and today they became a parent's worst nightmare. No one should be a victim of violence, especially children,” Buscaino said in a statement.
