Queen Elizabeth II will be home for the holidays this Christmas amid a surge of the omicron COVID-19 variant.
The palace announced on Monday the queen decided not to spend Christmas at the royal Sandringham Estate in eastern England and will instead stay at Windsor Castle, which is west of London, according to Associated Press.
This marks the second year in a row the queen, 95, will not spend Christmas at Sandringham amid the pandemic, as she and her late husband, Prince Philip, spent Christmas at Windsor in 2020.
RISE IN SHOOTINGS FORCES MISSISSIPPI TOWN TO CANCEL CHRISTMAS PARADE
This year, the queen also canceled her traditional pre-Christmas lunch out of caution for the omicron variant of COVID-19. The monarch has had a few health issues over the past few months, including a hospitalization in October and a back sprain, causing her to cancel her appearances at several major events, including Remembrance Sunday.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the United Kingdom's first death from the omicron variant on Dec. 13, noting people need to recognize the speed at which the virus has coursed through populations.
