Russia announced that it intends to attend the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics.

Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed that he would appear at the Beijing Olympics as part of a partnership between Russia and China.

Putin pledged during a video call with Chinese leader Xi Jinping that the two world leaders "will hold talks and then participate in the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympic Games," reports the Guardian.

This agreement comes as part of discussions between Russia and China. Putin claims that a "new model of cooperation has been formed between our countries, based on other matters of principles such as noninterference in [each other's] internal affairs."

Russia and China have both been the focus of the United States and other Western countries. They have expressed concerns about the cultural and military actions that either nation could take.

China faces several diplomatic boycotts of its Winter Olympics from Western nations, including the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and others. The collection of countries has expressed concerns about China's human rights violations involving the Uyghur Muslim community.

Russia is currently banned from competing in the Olympics due to Moscow sponsoring the doping of several Russian athletes. That has not stopped Russia from criticizing the U.S. "Our position is that the Olympic Games should be free of politics," a Kremlin spokesperson said on Dec. 7.

Ukraine faces a growing threat of military action from Russia, which has moved more than 175,000 Russian soldiers to the Ukraine border. These motions have led U.S. intelligence officials to suspect that Russia intends to conduct a multifront offensive against Ukraine as early as 2022.
