A private school in New York City is under fire for its stringent mask requirements for students in its Middle and Upper divisions.

Horace Mann School in the Bronx will require students to wear face-coverings "appropriately" or risk being suspended, according to an email sent to parents and posted on social media.

Students who fail to wear face masks in an appropriate fashion "will be sent home without access to remote instruction for the duration of a two-day suspension," the email read.

No student at Horace Mann School is approved to participate in in-person instruction without a mask, and the email said every student understands or appreciates why masks must cover an individual's mouth and nose.

"At HM, mask noncompliance for students is intentional noncompliance," according to the email. "In almost every instance, noncompliant students already know who they are."

The new "aggressive" mask policy will extend to cocurricular and interscholastic events, the school noted.

"There will be no debating whether a prompt was once, twice, or thrice, if you need to be told to wear your mask appropriately, you will spend two days at home, and if it occurs a second time, you are telling me that HM is not the school for you," the email read.
