A Maryland police officer has been charged with raping an illegal immigrant during a traffic stop while on duty in the early hours.
Officer 1st Class Ryan Macklin of Prince George's County Police Department was arrested Monday evening, according to the police department, which said that a preliminary investigation shows that Mackin pulled the woman over early on Thursday morning before demanding she perform a sexual act in a parking lot.
"The charges against this officer are highly troubling," Chief Hank Stawinski said in a statement Monday evening. "Officers take an oath to protect others, not to abuse their authority in order to victimize someone. Those who live and work in Prince George's County deserve the very best from the men and women of this department."
According to NBC News, the victim was an illegal immigrant. Macklin, who was wearing a uniform and was on-duty at the time of the alleged assault, faces charges of first degree rape, second degree rape, perverted practice, second degree assault, and fourth degree sex offense, according to Prince George’s County Police Department.
An investigation is being spearheaded by the Prince George’s County Police Department’s special investigation response team, along with the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office. Macklin has been suspended in light of the allegations.
