Police have arrested a 16-year-old boy in connection to the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Malachi Jackson, who authorities say is the youngest homicide victim reported in Washington, D.C., so far this year.

The Metropolitan Police Department arrested the teenage suspect, whose name was not released publicly, on one charge of first-degree murder while armed. The teenager allegedly shot Jackson on April 11 in the 3000 block of 13th Street in northwest Washington, where he was later pronounced dead on the scene.

“It hurts because my grandson is no longer here, and this young man gets to still breathe on God’s earth,” Jackson’s grandmother told NBC Washington. “He gets to breathe God’s air. He gets to still talk to his family.”

Jackson was shot in the head and the back after gunfire was exchanged late at night on April 11, according to his family. The teenager had just moved to the Columbia Heights neighborhood, where police used security cameras to identify a suspect, officials told the outlet.

There have been 65 homicides reported in Washington so far this year, with 15-year-old Jackson being the youngest killed so far, according to officials. Two 16-year-olds were shot and killed in separate incidents earlier this year, and city police have been seeking to address the rise in crime among teenagers.

It is not entirely clear whether police have determined a motive for the shooting or if others were involved. The MPD has not responded to a request for comment by the Washington Examiner.
