A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officer is dead following a highway collision between a tractor-trailer and a squad car Wednesday morning.

Officer Mia Goodwin died as a result of the crash, CMPD Police Chief Johnny Jennings confirmed, adding that she "proudly served the University City Division."


Officers were blocking off the road on Interstate 85 after another traffic collision when the tractor-trailer crashed into Goodwin's vehicle.

A driver from the tractor-trailer was taken to the hospital, WCNC reported.


Several local officials offered condolences on social media after Goodwin's death.

"On behalf of the men and women of @charlottefire I want to express our deepest sympathies to the family, friends, and members of @CMPD. We stand ready to support and assist in any way," Charlotte Fire Department Fire Chief Reginald Johnson tweeted.


"Our hearts are with family, friends & Charlotte Mecklenburg PD on the loss of Officer Mia Goodwin who was killed on duty during a traffic collision. I've talked with Chief Jennings to offer support & sympathy. Grateful for officers who take risks every day to keep us safe," North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper tweeted.
