A 15-year-old boy is in the hospital after his father, a police officer, accidentally shot him in the head, authorities said.

The teenager from Jacksonville, North Carolina, was hospitalized Monday with serious injuries, according to District Attorney Ernie Lee.

"The father of the victim is the alleged shooter, and he is employed as a law enforcement officer with the City of Jacksonville," Lee said in a news release on Tuesday. "The victim, a male age 15 years, sustained a life-threatening injury from a single gunshot wound to the head [...] This is a tragic event and this matter remains under investigation by the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office."

The victim was at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, Lee said, adding the investigation will determine whether any charges will be filed.

"The Onslow County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an investigation into the incident and the Jacksonville Police Department is fully cooperating with their investigation," the sheriff's office said in a statement. "We ask that our community members keep our employee and their family in their thoughts and prayers at this time.”

The Onslow County Sheriff's office did not respond to the Washington Examiner's request for comment.
