A 9-year-old girl in Virginia was hospitalized Tuesday with life-threatening injuries after she was shot while playing in a neighbor's yard.
Officers arrived on the scene around 6:41 p.m. to find the girl bleeding in the yard and began to deliver first aid until additional rescue personnel arrived, according to a release from the Prince William County Police Department.
The young girl from Woodbridge was wounded after multiple shots were fired from a group of males who were walking in the area.

"Detectives have initially determined that the victim was not the intended target of the shooting," the release read. "The rounds also struck an occupied vehicle driving in the area and the front door of a home."
No other victims or property damage were reported, and no arrests have been made.
"The suspects were described as teenaged black males wearing dark clothing," according to the release. "Preliminarily, the incident does not appear to be random and there is no active threat to the community. The investigation continues."
The girl is reportedly in stable condition after having emergency surgery Tuesday night.

"Picture your 9-year-old in a friend's yard and some fools get out there, decide they want to settle a dispute with a gun, next thing you know, you got your child in a hospital, in surgery with a bullet wound," Prince William County Police Chief Peter Newsham said. "Just ridiculous."
