A New York family broke its own world record for most Christmas lights on a residential property with a display of 687,000 lights.

The Gay family of Hudson Valley, New York, first claimed the Guinness World Record in 2014 for the most lights on a residential property with 601,736 bulbs and has continued to break that record since. This year, the Gays hope to raise $500,000 of voluntary donations for the fire department and local charities from visitors to the drive-through display, the Albany Times-Union reported.

The yearly light display first started gaining attention outside the neighborhood when they added animation in 2007. Tim Gay, Grace Gay, and their three grown children have all worked in or studied engineering, which helps them develop the massive displays.

Visitors can take a short drive through the wooded property every night between 4:45 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. on weekdays and 10:30 p.m. on weekends from Nov. 26 to Dec. 28.

Tim Gay said their electricity bill only costs approximately $350 for the month since most of the lights have LEDs. He loves the joy that his work inspires, and they've had 19 marriage proposals throughout the years, which they are happy to assist by programming the lights to spell out "marry me."

“It always felt pretty cool being a part of something so big,” said daughter Emily Gay. “It’s really been a gift to see that happen over time, to start something small where it felt more personal and intimate as our family tradition, and then grow it into a tradition for so many people in the community.”
