CNN's Michael Smerconish will fill in for Chris Cuomo in his prime time spot next week, a spokesperson told the Washington Examiner.

The move is a stopgap measure after Cuomo was suspended from the network "indefinitely" on Tuesday as CNN said it would evaluate documents released by the New York Attorney General's office showing the host's involvement in helping his brother, former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, as he pushed back against allegations of sexual harassment.

The documents indicated that Chris Cuomo helped his brother respond to allegations of sexual misconduct and even used his own media contacts to gather information for the former governor. CNN suspended him, saying the documents suggested Chris Cuomo's involvement went further than they originally knew. It is unclear when the company will make a final decision on his suspension.

Smerconish is a former Republican known for his advocacy of independent political thinking and describes himself as a centrist. Like Chris Cuomo, he is a trained lawyer.

Smerconish served as a regional administrator in the Department of Housing and Urban Development under former President George H.W. Bush. He mostly supported Republicans during his earlier career. In 2008, he backed then-candidate Barack Obama and left the Republican Party.

Anderson Cooper, who hosts his show in the 8 p.m. time slot on weekdays, filled in for Chris Cuomo for most of the past week.
