Professor and author Jordan Peterson characterized Canada as increasingly authoritarian on Twitter Wednesday, commenting on a years-old clip of him warning that civil liberties tend to be eroded incrementally.

In the clip, pulled from an interview Peterson gave to Joe Rogan in 2016, he said, "Things get to terrible places one tiny step at a time."

"If I encroach on you and I'm sophisticated about it, I'm going to encroach 2 millimeters. I'm going to encroach right to the point where you start to protest, then I'm going to stop," Peterson said. "Then I'm going to wait. Then you're going to calm down."

"Then I'm going to encroach again, right to the point where you protest. Then I'm going to stop. Then I'm going to wait. And I'm just going to do that forever," he continued. "And before you know it, you're going to be back 3 miles from where you started, and you'll have done it one step at a time."

"And then you'll go, 'How did I get here?' And the answer was, 'Well, I pushed you a little farther than you should have gone, and you agreed,'" Peterson added.

Columnist Rita Panahi tweeted the 5-year-old clip Wednesday, prompting Peterson to reply: "The story of Canada right now."

Peterson has been an opponent of Canada's coronavirus measures, including vaccine mandates and travel restrictions, since the start of the pandemic. Peterson complained in November about ensuing restrictions for vaccinated people in Canada.

"Look, I got vaccinated, and people took me to task for that," he said. "And I thought, 'All right, I'll get the damn vaccine.'"

“Here’s the deal, guys — I'll get the vaccine, you f***ing leave me alone. And did that work? No. So, stupid me," Peterson continued. "That's how I feel about it. So, like, well, I have to get tested for COVID when I come back into Canada. I have to get tested before I leave Canada. ... Why did I get the vaccine then if you're not going to leave me alone?"
