Rep. Madison Cawthorn announced Wednesday evening that he and his wife, Cristina Bayardelle, will be getting a divorce.

The two got legally married in 2020 and had a ceremony in April 2021, but Cawthorn said in a statement his election to Congress changed his lifestyle in ways he and his wife had not planned.

MADISON CAWTHORN WARNS OF 'BLOODSHED' IF FUTURE 'RIGGED' ELECTIONS OCCUR

"When my wife Cristina and I were engaged, I was not a member of Congress," he said in a statement. "Our victory was unprecedented, but overnight our lives changed. That change has been both hectic and difficult, it's neither the pace nor the lifestyle we had planned for."

Cawthorn was elected to serve as a congressman for North Carolina's 11th District in 2020 at the age of 25.

He said he and his wife tried to fight for their marriage and make things work but ultimately had "irreconcilable differences." He said they mutually decided to get a divorce and are asking for privacy as they work through it.

The two held a private wedding ceremony in North Carolina on April 3. Cawthorn told People they picked that date because it was the anniversary of his car crash in 2014.

Cawthorn was returning from a spring break trip when his friend fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into a concrete barrier, according to legal documents. He had his feet up on the dashboard and was partially paralyzed in the crash. He was 18 years old at the time.
