France threatened to block five pornographic websites unless they enforce age verification restrictions that ensure users at 18 years or older.

Pornographic websites Pornhub, xHamster, XVideos, XNXX, and TuKif were issued an ultimatum by the Higher Audiovisual Council of France that said they have until the end of the day Tuesday to institute age verification measures, according to The Times.

The council said that as a result of relaxed restrictions on adult sites that "children faced by such content can suffer lasting shock at the very least," adding that if measures were not implemented it would seek a block from a judge.

Requiring visitors to show proof of identity either with a document or photograph — or requiring credit cards, banking information, or phone bills — were among acceptable forms of age verification measures, according to the report.

The French Parliament voted unanimously on July 9, 2020, to introduce a national age verification system for adult websites containing pornographic content as part of an effort to protect children against viewing such content.

"It is important to put pornography sites under pressure so they cannot continue to flout the legal framework to which they have themselves agreed," said Justine Atlan, the director for the child safety organization e-Enfance.

The council said pornographic websites asking users to click on a box to say they are over the age of 18 is against the law.

The Washington Examiner reached out to Pornhub, xHamster, XVideos, and XNXX for comment but was unable to contact TuKif.
