A former leader from Planned Parenthood expressed opposition to legislating abortion on a federal level.
Anti-abortion rights activist and former Planned Parenthood clinic director Abby Johnson argued that abortion should be decided on a state-by-state basis, a departure from the view held by many people associated with Planned Parenthood, the majority of whom have expressed outrage at Monday's leaked draft opinion authored by Justice Samuel Alito apparently overturning the Roe v. Wade precedent in Dobbs v. Women's Health Organization.
"[Abortion] still should not be a federal issue," Johnson said on Fox & Friends First Tuesday. "This should be something that is fought at the state level. It's a little ridiculous the way that people are acting right now that some of these influencers and legislators are acting right now. They're acting as if abortion is completely going away, which I think is intentional, the way that they're acting."

Several states, such as New Jersey and New York, have already "codified Roe onto their books," while other states, including Texas and Louisiana, have decided that "abortion is not what we want in our state," Johnson said.
At least 26 states are certain or likely to ban abortion once Roe is rescinded, according to the Guttmacher Institute. Gov. Kristi Noem (R-SD) announced Monday that she would call a special legislative session to restrict abortion once the Supreme Court finalized its decision. At least four states have promised to become "abortion sanctuaries" if Roe is rescinded.
The decision from the Supreme Court represents a threat to individual rights, some on the Left have argued. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) said that "SCOTUS isn’t just coming for abortion — they’re coming for the right to privacy Roe rests on, which includes gay marriage + civil rights."
