Filipino President Rodrigo Duterte said Tuesday he plans to “declare war” on Canada if they do not remove tons of trash from ports in the Philippines within a week.

“For Canada’s garbage, I want a boat prepared,” Duterte said. “They better pull that thing out, or I will set sail to Canada and dump their garbage there.”

Duterte’s comments come in response to Canada allowing ships filled with garbage to sit in a Filipino port outside Manila for over five years.

Although the Philippines is unlikely to start a literal garbage war, the Canadian Embassy in Manila did say they were attempting to resolve the issue “with a view to a timely resolution” and “to ensure the material is processed in an environmentally responsible way.”

This is not the first dispute between Duterte and the Canadian government. In 2017, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau criticized Duterte’s drug war in the Philippines. Duterte responded by saying he does not respond to “bullshit” from “foreigners.”
