Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., tweeted a close-up photo of his face for seemingly no reason Thursday, prompting widespread jokes and mockery on Twitter.
Amid a contentious fight in the Senate over Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, Twitter users found some levity in Leahy's photo showing him outside of the U.S. Capitol with a wry smirk.
No caption was provided, but a number of users offered their own ideas. "Feeling cute, might delete later," wrote Sarah Mimms of BuzzFeed.

In fact, that suggested caption appeared quite a bit among the Twitter faithful.

Howard Mortman of C-SPAN shared an old, but eerily similar photo of Leahy from 1986. Leahy has held his Senate seat since 1975.

Another user noted Leahy's frequent appearances in "Batman" movies.
this is the face of a man who's been in more batman movies than anyone else https://t.co/WTYj1aHQUe

While not exactly the same, the tweet was reminiscent of one sent by Ed Balls, the former finance chief for the opposition Labour Party in the United Kingdom. He gained notoriety for sending out his first tweet with only his name.
Leahy has been no stranger to mockery and derision.
Back in 2004, Vice President Dick Cheney told Leahy to "go fuck yourself" on the Senate floor amid a confrontation about Cheney's ties to Halliburton Co.
More recently, President Trump took aim at Leahy, flipping the script on Democrats who are concerned about Kavanaugh's drinking habits during his younger years as investigators looked into allegations of sexual assault the judge is facing.
Trump hinted Tuesday at a rally in Mississippi that Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., could have a drinking habit, telling the crowd that they should do an online search for “Patrick Leahy dash drink.”
As for the fun Twitter users were having Thursday, Leahy appeared to take it in stride. He responded to his own tweet with a short message: "yep... that's me..."
