A sheriff in Kentucky was taken into custody by his own deputy on Thursday after he allegedly punched a teenage girl at a high school basketball game.

Owsley County Sheriff Brent Lynch faces a fourth-degree assault charge for allegedly striking the high school basketball player after a fight broke out at a girls basketball game at Perry County Central High School on Dec. 3.

The 47-year-old sheriff is a member of the Owsley County High School coaching staff and ran from his team's bench into the melee, according to footage of the incident posted to social media.

A warrant for Lynch was issued on Tuesday, and he was arrested by an Owsley County deputy two days later, according to a report.

Lynch was booked into Three Forks Regional Jail in Lee County, Kentucky, and could be sentenced to a year in prison if convicted.

He is also suspended from his coaching duties, said Owsley County Schools Superintendent Tim Bobrowski.
