One of the victims of a mass shooting at a Texas elementary school was a teacher who died trying to protect her students and shield them from gunfire, officials revealed Wednesday.

Eva Mireles, one of two teachers who died during the shooting on Tuesday, was killed after the gunman entered her classroom, barricaded himself, and began shooting. All 19 of the children killed in a shooting at a Texas elementary school on Tuesday were in the same fourth grade classroom, according to a state public safety official.

Two of the adults among the victims were co-teachers in a fourth grade classroom, identified as Mireles and Irma Garcia, according to reports.

Mireles was a teacher of 17 years, an avid hiker, and a wife and mother, her aunt Lydia Martinez Delgado told the New York Times. 

"Mom, I have no words to describe how I feel right now, tomorrow, and for the rest of my life,” Mireles’s daughter wrote Wednesday in a Facebook post. “I never thought that I would be here writing this type of post for you. Mom, you are a hero. I keep telling myself that this isn’t real. I just want to hear your voice.”

Salvador Ramos, an 18-year-old who had attended a nearby high school, has been identified as the gunman. He also reportedly shot his grandmother before the school attack, and officials said she was still in critical condition as of Tuesday night.

The gunman was wearing body armor and a backpack when he entered the school, and he made it into several classrooms before being killed, Sgt. Erick Estrada of the Texas Department of Public Safety told CNN's Anderson Cooper. The shooter was armed with at least one of the two military-style rifles that he had purchased for his 18th birthday, according to state Sen. Roland Gutierrez, who said he was briefed by state police.

Uvalde is a town of roughly 16,000 people and is situated between San Antonio and Del Rio. The town is dozens of miles away from the southern border and has a Border Patrol station.
