Police first responded to a double shooting on Galveston Street in Southwest Washington shortly after 8 p.m., where one victim was pronounced dead on the scene, and another man was found conscious and breathing, according to the Metropolitan Police Department. Over an hour later, police responded to another shooting fewer than four miles away at 600 Malcolm X Avenue in Southeast Washington around 9:20 p.m. The victim was found unconscious but breathing, and the MPD had identified a black adult male as a suspect, according to the agency.

Shortly after, police responded to a shooting of an adult male on Stanton Road in Southeast Washington around 9:30 p.m.

It’s not clear whether the shooting incidents are connected or if police have made any arrests so far. Preliminary reports indicate the shootings are still under investigation, and the MPD has not responded to a request for comment by the Washington Examiner.

The string of shootings on Tuesday night reflects a larger trend of increasing crime within the area, with violent crime up 21% compared to this time last year, according to MPD data.

The city government is coming to grips with the rising crime rate, with Mayor Muriel Bowser using it as a focal point in her reelection bid before the mayoral Democratic primary in June.

Bowser has proposed plans to expand police ranks and reach 4,000 sworn officers over the next decade, marking a sharp reversal from the district’s stance of defunding the police during social justice protests in 2020.
