The Jan. 6 select committee says it “has no choice” but to hold Mark Meadows in criminal contempt of Congress for refusing to cooperate with the investigation into the Capitol riot.

Chairman Bennie Thompson wrote Wednesday that "the Select Committee is left with no choice but to advance contempt proceedings and recommend that the body in which Mr. Meadows once served refer him for criminal prosecution."

JAN. 6 COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN: MARK MEADOWS DEPOSITION TO PROCEED DESPITE REFUSAL TO COOPERATE

Meadows's lawyer told the committee Tuesday that his client would no longer be cooperating with the committee due to demands to view information protected by executive privilege and questions about unfair treatment. Meadows was former President Donald Trump's chief of staff at the time of the riot.

Former Trump adviser Steve Bannon also refused to cooperate last month and has a trial set for next July.
