A couples counselor that formerly treated actors Johnny Depp and Amber Heard testified in the high-profile defamation trial that when "triggered," Heard would often start a physical fight with Depp.
A recorded deposition of Dr. Laurel Anderson was shown in court on Thursday, the third day of Depp's $50 million defamation trial against Heard.
"A lot of things trigger her," Anderson said, "and if she's triggered, she would hit him first."
'NO CUTS, NO BRUISES': WITNESS ALLEGES NO ABUSE, ROUSES LAUGHTER OVER DEPP FRIENDSHIP
Heard told Anderson about the domestic violence she experienced as a child, pointing to alleged instances when her father, David Heard, beat her. Fighting back became "a point of pride," according to Heard, per Anderson. As a result, if Depp made a move to leave a room in order to "deescalate the fight, [Heard] would hit him to keep him there."
When Heard made allegations that Depp hit her, Anderson made notes that he did so with no closed fists, which "means an open hand slap," according to the counselor.
Depp was not present when Heard alleged the abuse to Anderson. In a private phone call with Anderson, Heard alleged that Depp was "f***ed up" on illicit drugs.
Anderson reported seeing photos of bruises on Heard's face but could not remember where exactly the bruises were located. She also reviewed the couple's medications and a brain scan Heard had undergone, but she never observed the two being violent toward each other.
Judge Penney Azcarate excused one witness Depp's team had invited because she admitted to seeing clips of other witness testimonies from the trial. The witness, Gina Deuters, was a visual artist for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Pirates of the Caribbean 4. Deuters's husband also worked in the production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Gina Deuters alleged that she had her first MDMA pill, courtesy of Heard, at the couple's wedding. Judge Azcarate instructed the jury to strike her testimony from their decision.
