The suspect, 25, is a man from the borough of Queens who is allegedly connected to a criminal gang. He has been arrested 11 times since 2012 for charges including robbery and assault, police said. He has not been charged in this attack.

The university mourned the loss of Giri, who was studying computer science.

"This news is both unspeakably sad and deeply shocking, as it took place only steps from our campus," Columbia President Lee Bollinger said in a letter to students. "The University is working closely with NYPD to learn more details of the attack and, of course, we will keep you updated as we learn more."
