Coldplay's frontman, Chris Martin, announced that the alternative rock band will no longer be recording music as of 2025.

Martin made the announcement on-air with BBC Radio 2 presenter Jo Whiley on a show that will be broadcast on Friday, the Guardian reports. The announcement comes after the band released their ninth studio album, Music of the Spheres, which reached the top of music charts earlier this year.

“Our last proper record will come out in 2025, and after that, I think we will only tour,” said Martin. “And maybe we’ll do some collaborative things, but the Coldplay catalog, as it were, finishes then.”

The news is consistent with previous statements made by Martin in October, when he told NME that he intended to make a total of three more albums.

“We’re going to make 12 albums. Because it’s a lot to pour everything into making them. I love it and it’s amazing, but it’s very intense too. I feel like because I know that challenge is finite, making this music doesn’t feel difficult, it feels like, ‘This is what we’re supposed to be doing’," he said.

Fans of Coldplay responded to the news with sadness.

"Well, we knew the day would come sometime. I guess I was just in denial and hoping it would be longer. It's the first time they've put a date on it... Here's to the last 3 albums!" one fan tweeted.

Others felt positively about the band's announcement.

“Amongst all the Covid misery, there is a small glimpse of a better future," a Coldplay hater tweeted.
