A 13-year-old boy died after a tunnel he apparently dug into a sand dune at a Utah state park collapsed while he was inside.

The incident occurred on Saturday just after 5:30 p.m. outside a campground in Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park in Kane County, Utah State Parks said Monday.

The boy, identified as Ian Spendlove, was found nearly 6 1/2 feet under the sand by authorities. Spendlove was airlifted to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead on Sunday.

A family member who witnessed the collapse notified personnel, and state park officials and police began digging while waiting for first responders to arrive, officials said.

The incident remains under investigation.

The state park, located in southwestern Utah, has coral-colored sand dunes that originate from Navajo sandstone, which are estimated to be 10,000 to 15,000 years old.
