The death of Bob Dole, the former Senate majority leader, war hero, and 1996 Republican presidential nominee, left many in sadness on Sunday, wishing on social media for him to rest in peace.
Politicians from both sides paid their respects to Dole, remembering the service he provided both on the battlefield and in the Senate.
"God bless Bob Dole and his family," Dan Crenshaw wrote on Twitter. "Thinking of you today."
THERE MIGHT NOT BE A WORLD WAR II MEMORIAL WITHOUT BOB DOLE

Bob Dole was a truly great American. I had the privilege to know him for the past 26 years as Senator, presidential candidate, husband to my boss, and wise and generous friend. Another icon of the greatest generation has now stepped into history.#BobDole pic.twitter.com/X8Iby81x4P

Bob Dole served his country with courage on the battlefield, and with dignity in the Senate. Jane and I send our condolences to his family.

Disagreed with Bob Dole on a lot, but he came from a bygone age when American politicians knew how to lose gracefully and be respectful towards opponents.

He was also the last WWII veteran to be a presidential nominee, so his death really does mark the end of an era. https://t.co/jQ4bLbfSUV
So Bob Dole's dead. A bastard to the end, Trumping when he didn't need to. But it's hard to forget the horror he went through. Raised in dust storms, deployed as cannon fodder, returned to dust w/ that arm w/ which he'd hang for hours in his garage in a futile attempt to recover.
