The Bidens introduced a new furry member to the first family on Monday in a pet shake-up in which they are giving away their other dog who has bitten at least two people in the White House and make plans to take in a cat in the new year.

Commander, a German shepherd puppy, was welcomed by President Joe Biden in a post to Twitter.

"Welcome to the White House, Commander," Biden tweeted, posting a picture of the pup.

The Bidens had two German shepherds upon entering the White House, Champ and Major, but Champ died "peacefully at home" at the age of 13, the first family said in mid-June.

The Biden's other dog, Major, had a difficult time adjusting to the new environment at the White House. After a couple biting incidents, first lady Jill Biden's office said Major would get additional training.

But Michael LaRosa, a spokesman to Jill Biden, later told the Washington Post that Major is now being given away.

“After consulting with dog trainers, animal behaviorists, and veterinarians, the first family has decided to follow the experts’ collective recommendation that it would be safest for Major to live in a quieter environment with family friends,” LaRosa said, adding that the decision was made “after several months of deliberation as a family and discussions with experts.”

After the Bidens said in April that they planned on adopting a cat, LaRosa confirmed that the first family will take in a female cat in January.

The name, age, and type of cat have not been confirmed yet. It will be the first time the White House has had a cat in over a decade. George W. Bush was the most recent president to have a cat: India "Willie" Bush. Biden's predecessor, Donald Trump, did not have any animals during his tenure in the White House.
