President Joe Biden welcomed a rematch against former President Donald Trump in 2024.
A foreign journalist asked Biden about his reelection prospects during a press conference in Brussels on Thursday, claiming there are "widespread concerns in Europe" someone like Trump would succeed him. Biden did not mention Trump by name but said he would be "very fortunate if I had that same man running against me," according to NBC News.
“We’re a long way off in elections — a long way off,” Biden said. “My focus of any election is on making sure that we retain the House and the United States Senate so that I have the room to continue to do the things that I’ve been able to do in terms of grow the economy and deal in a rational way with American foreign policy and lead the world.”

Biden's national approval rating is 34%, the most recent Grinnell College National Poll found, with most respondents believing the U.S. economy is getting worse. His popularity in congressional districts with a high number of independent voters has also plummeted, an analysis by the National Republican Congressional Committee surveying 77 battleground districts ahead of the 2022 midterm elections found.
Trump has not announced a 2024 run but has hinted at one on numerous occasions since leaving the White House. He told the Washington Examiner last week that "the country is doing terribly" and criticized Biden's handling of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in August of last year. He also repeated his 2020 election fraud claims, calling it "the biggest thing there is in politics."
