A House Democrat from Arizona blasted Sen. Ted Cruz with profanity-laced tweets after the Republican denounced calls from colleagues across the aisle to implement stricter gun control laws after a deadly elementary school mass shooting in Texas on Tuesday.
Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ), a potential challenger to centrist Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, criticized Cruz as a hypocrite for identifying himself as an anti-abortion lawmaker and pushing for the reversal of Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortions nationwide, but not taking more steps to fight mass shootings.
TEXAS AG FACING RUNOFF SAYS BANNING GUNS FOR PUBLIC SAFETY ‘RIDICULOUS’ AFTER SCHOOL SHOOTING
“F*** you @tedcruz, you care about a fetus but you will let our children get slaughtered. Just get your a** to Cancun. You are useless,” Gallego said in a tweet, referring to the senator's controversial family trip to the Mexican resort destination during a winter emergency in Texas last year.
The harsh criticism comes in response to comments from Cruz, who argued that instead of making it harder for “law-abiding citizens” to access guns, which he said would ultimately be ineffective in reducing gun deaths, the state should increase the number of armed law enforcement officials on school campuses to deter attacks.
“Inevitably when there's a [murder] of this kind, you see politicians try to politicize it — you see Democrats and a lot of folks in the media whose immediate solution is to try to restrict the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens,” Cruz told a CNN reporter, “We are seeing way too many of these horrific mass murders. And we need to devote far more law enforcement resources to stopping violent criminals and preventing these kinds of absolute acts of evil."
At least 21 people were killed in Tuesday's shooting, including 19 children and two teachers, according to officials in the state. The shooter was killed by law enforcement.
Several congressional Democrats responded to the shooting by calling for stricter gun laws, mental health reforms to curb violence, and reduced access to firearms to prevent future massacres.
