A Georgia man was arrested on Tuesday after he reportedly shot and killed his mother and stepfather, police said.

Peyton Moyer, 20, was charged with two counts of murder and one count of cruelty to children. He is accused of shooting and killing his mother, 41-year-old Ashley Schultz, and his stepfather, 54-year-old Benjamin Smith, at a home in Watkinsville, Georgia, Oconee County Sheriff James Hale said.


Officers responded to the residents on Tuesday around midnight and found Schultz and Smith dead, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Moyer’s 16-year-old and 4-year-old sisters were found inside the home unharmed.

Moyer fled the scene in a vehicle belonging to one of the victims but was quickly tracked down and arrested by Athens-Clarke County police.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the victim’s," the sheriff's office said in a social media post.


An investigation into the shooting is ongoing.

Deputies arrested Austin Alvarez, 23, for the double murder later that day after discovering he had fled the scene in a pickup truck. A motive for the shooting is still unclear.

"During the visit, Alvarez fired shots striking his grandmother (Magdalena Alvarez) and his father’s girlfriend (Meisa Rashid)," a press release said. "As Alvarez was leaving the house, he noticed his father in a parked vehicle. Alvarez fired shots in his direction, but did not strike him."
