WHO'S NO. 1: Sales of Toyota's Camry, the top-selling car in America, are up almost 40 percent through July, and the Camry has a 60,000-car lead over its closest competitors, the Honda Accord and Nissan Altima.
THE REASON: Toyota's sales were artificially low last year because its factories were slowed by a March earthquake and tsunami in Japan. The company couldn't build enough cars to supply dealers. But a new trend is emerging. Toyota says the Camry is attracting younger buyers. The average age of a buyer now is between 51 and 52, about nine years younger than last year. A sport version is mainly what's brining younger buyers in.
THE FUTURE: The Camry faces tough competition. New models from Nissan, Honda, Ford, Chevrolet and others are coming.
