FIRST CUT: IHS iSuppli says global semiconductor chip shipments are set to fall by 0.1 percent this year. That's down from a previous forecast for growth of up to 3 percent. It's the first annual decline since recession-colored 2009.

SECOND CUT: IDC, another research firm, detects the slowdown in the PC market, too. It expects PC shipments to grow just 0.9 percent this year. That's down from the firm's forecast of 5 percent growth issued in March.

TRENDS: PCs are facing competition from mobile devices such as the iPad.
