Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber turned next week's 2010 MLS All-Star Game into a tribute match with his two picks for the MLS All-Star team, naming D.C. United forward Jaime Moreno and Houston Dynamo forward Brian Ching to the MLS roster for the exhibition match against Manchester United on May 28 at Reliant Stadium in Houston.
Moreno, who has been a part of MLS for all of its 15 seasons, has just one goal and five starts this season. He's appeared in 15 of D.C.'s 17 matches but has played more than a half only five times, with three 90-minute appearances.
Ching has three goals and an assist in 9 games (7 starts) for the Dynamo, which will also have midfielder Brad Davis on the MLS All-Star roster as a deserving (and local) representative, with 3 goals and 6 assists this season.
The rest of the All-Star reserves, as chosen by Los Angeles head coach Bruce Arena: Real Salt Lake GK Nick Rimando, New England D Kevin Alston, Chivas USA D Jonathan Bornstein, Chicago D Wilman Conde, Dallas D Heath Pearce, Dallas MF David Ferreira, New England MF Shalrie Joseph, Colorado MF Jeff Larentowicz, Philadelphia F Sebastien Le Toux, New York F Juan Pablo Angel.
The top of the snubbed list: D.C. MF Andy Najar, Real Salt Lake F Alvaro Saborio, New York MF Joel Lindpere, San Jose MF Bobby Convey. Seattle's Fredy Montero would also be on this list, but no Sounders are coming to Houston because they have a CONCACAF Champions League match on the 28th.
The First XI was named last week: Los Angeles GK Donovan Ricketts; Real Salt Lake D Jamison Olave, Columbus D Chad Marshall, Los Angeles D Omar Gonzalez; Toronto MF Dwayne De Rosario, Columbus MF Guillermo Barros Schelotto, Real Salt Lake MF Kyle Beckerman (injured), Real Salt Lake MF Javier Morales, Chicago MF Marco Pappa; Los Angeles F Landon Donovan, and Los Angeles F Edson Buddle.
Under the new collective bargaining agreement, a total of 32 players will be named all-stars so another nine inactive all-stars, chosen via the weighted voting process, will be announced at a later date.
