SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Salt Lake City judge has declared a mistrial in the case of a woman charged with crashing into an office building to hit her estranged husband.
Judge William Barrett declared the mistrial in 3rd District Court after a friend of 36-year-old defendant Brenda Christine White alleged that three jurors were discussing the case in an elevator Thursday evening.
Court spokeswoman Nancy Volmer says the judge questioned the jurors under oath Friday morning and they denied it. But Volmer says the judge decided to err on the side of caution. A new trial could be set for next year.
White is accused of hitting her ex-husband twice with her Ford Explorer after crashing through the office building in Salt Lake County in 2006. His injuries included a broken leg.
Defense appeals have delayed the case.
