The giant bird is dead.

A Calvert County farmer shot and killed a roving emu on Thursday after police spent roughly nine weeks hunting the 6-foot-tall wild bird. The farmer told county police he thought the bird was a threat to his animals.  No one has come forward to claim the animal.

County residents began reporting emu sightings in early November. Police cautioned residents not to go near the bird, which can run up to 30 miles per hour and uses knife-like toenails to defend itself.
